Choosing Your Course Novel
This course is built around one novel you choose yourself; picking the right one in four steps makes every summative assignment that follows much easier.
Learning Goals
- 1Read a variety of texts
- 2Use reading comprehension strategies
What a Literature Study Is and Why It Matters
In this course, you will be engaging in a literature studyliterature study . To do this, you will select and read a novel from a list of novels selected for ENG3U. You will then learn to analyse the different elements of this novel and use your analysis to complete a variety of assignments that show your ability to engage with complex fictional texts in a variety of ways.
Novels help us allow us to explore topics and experiences that we may or may not have experienced, explore new perspectives, visualize events, and learn about the world around us by immersing us in someone else's world.
Literature studies is an important skill that can help you learn to understand texts – written and media – both in and outside of school. By learning to think critically about different texts, analyse texts for effective literary devicesliterary devices , identify character types, analyze the plotplot , and create new texts based off existing stories, you will develop a greater appreciation for your own personal favourite books, TV shows, movies, poems, and songs. You will also be able to apply your learning about literature to your own writing.

Indian Horse - Richard Wagamese
Saul Indian Horse, an alcoholic who has hit rock bottom, realizes at a treatment centre that the only way to deal with his trauma is by telling his story. So, the story mainly recounts his life in late 1950s Ontario, where eight-year-old Saul is torn from his Ojibway family and committed to one of Canada's notorious Catholic Residential Schools. In this oppressive environment, Saul is denied the freedom to speak his language or embrace his Indigenous culture and he witnesses and experiences all kinds of abuse at the hands of the very people who were entrusted with his care. Readers embark on a journey back through the life he's led as a northern Ojibway, with all its joys and sorrows. Novel Link

Read a Few Pages
Identify your top 3 choices. For each of these choices, read the first 5 pages of the novel. As you read these pages, ask yourself: Is it interesting? Am I able to understand what I am reading? Do I like the style? Is this a novel I can work with for the entire course? Reading a little bit will help you decide which one you want to commit to reading for the course.
Remember, even if a text has challenging parts, if you find it interesting, that is what really matters.
Select Your Novel and Plan Your Reading
Make your choice, and start reading. If you find you are not actually connecting with the novel, you can switch your novel at any time, but be aware of your course timeline, as you are not entitled to extra time or extensions to catch up or start over. Hopefully, however, after doing steps 1 and 2, you make the right choice for you!
It is important that you plan time for reading. You must follow, at minimum, the schedule below, as the summative assignments in each unit require you to have read that amount to be able to complete them:
- By the End of Unit 1, you must have completed reading 20% of your novel;
- By the End of Unit 3: 75% of your novel;
- By the End of Unit 4: 100% of your novel.
Consider looking at your course deadlines, class schedule, and the overall length of your novel to develop reading goals that will help you meet these requirements.
- 第 1 单元结束前:至少读完小说的 20%;
- 第 3 单元结束前:读完 75%;
Reading Milestones
Take Notes
It is strongly recommended, for your own success, that you take notes on what you read. We suggest you download a copy of this novel study notes graphic organizergraphic organizer for each chapter of your novel and fill it out as you read, but you can also make your own. If you take the time as you read to record key ideas, events, details that you want to remember, and interesting quotes or examples that you might want to use to provide your points, you will have a significantly easier time completing the summatives, as you will have already helped future-you do much of the hard preparation!
You can see an exemplarexemplar here: Sample of Novel Study Notes. Remember that these are ultimately for you, and will never be assessed for marks.

You may switch novels at any time. However, the course gives no extra time or extensions to catch up or start over, so weigh the remaining course timeline and the new book's length before switching.
Pick one of the five novels and, using one of the three quotation-integration styles shown on this page, write a sentence that embeds a quotation (you may mark an invented one with 【待核】) into your own words, with an in-text citation.
示例(仿“写法一”,以《Indian Horse》为例):故事一开篇就让我们走近 Saul 的家庭,引文 “My grandmother, Naomi, was very old then” 把这位部族长者介绍给读者(Wagamese, ch. 3)。
Example (Option 1 style, using Indian Horse): The novel draws us close to Saul's family from the start, as the line "My grandmother, Naomi, was very old then" introduces this band matriarch to the reader (Wagamese, ch. 3).
Key moves: (1) put the quotation in quotation marks; (2) weave it smoothly into your own sentence; (3) end with an in-text citation (Author, ch. X).
