From Bias to Perspective

Cue · Media texts carry specific beliefs, values, identities, and power—here you evaluate how the narrator steers the direction of the tale.

In 1-1D: A Matter of Perspective: Identifying Bias, we discussed how media texts reflect specific beliefs, values, identities, and power. Now, we will be evaluating how the narrator determines the direction of the tale. This activity encourages you to question what you are reading by analyzing the biased perspectiveperspective in a text. You will look at the author's purposeauthor's purpose , examine multiple viewpoints, and also recognize gaps in the text. By examining two versions of the same tale, you will recognize that there are not only different versions of a story, but also different viewpoints to consider when reading.

  • 文本中被省略、留白的空白处(gaps in the text)

Note: Distinguish two ideas: a "bias" is not an error but the unavoidable angle every account carries; a "gap" is what the text leaves unsaid—often the clearest clue to the narrator's stance.

Note: Read the original first and note your first impression of the wolf—when you later watch the video, that initial judgment itself becomes material for analysis.

Whose Side Are We On?

Little Pigs
News Report
Big Bad Wolf

Note: Give each question roughly half your words, and answer both "with evidence." Be specific: instead of "the wolf seems pitiable," point to the exact shot or caption in the video that creates that feeling.

Summary

Change the narrator, and the "truth" of the story changes with it.

1

Narrative perspective decides what information reaches the reader and who earns our sympathy—it is never neutral.

2

任何故事都有空白(gaps):被省略的内容往往最能暴露叙述者的偏见(bias)Every story has gaps: what is left out often reveals the narrator's bias most clearly.

3

Comparing two versions of one story exposes how author's purpose and multiple viewpoints shape meaning.

4

A strong response is supported by specific evidence from the story and the video, not vague claims.

From whose perspective is the original "Three Little Pigs" usually told?

The original is told from the Little Pigs' side, which casts the wolf as an intruder/threat—exactly the default that the adaptation subverts by switching perspective.

In this activity, the most accurate meaning of a "gap" in the text is:

A gap is what the text leaves unsaid. Spotting gaps shows what the narrator chose to tell or hide, revealing their bias.

Which statement best matches this activity's view of "narrative perspective"?

The activity states that every story told has a specific perspective and asks how it affects the storyline—perspective is never neutral.

In one sentence, explain why comparing two versions of the same story helps us spot bias better than reading just one.

Because the two versions make different choices about the same events (what to tell, what to omit, whom to favor), and those differences make the otherwise invisible perspective and gaps visible—revealing each version's bias.

Formal task: Write a 250-300 word response answering two questions—(1) Do we ever get the full story, and does it matter? (2) How does narrative perspective affect the storyline of "The Three Little Pigs" in the video? Support your ideas with specific evidence from the story and the video.

完整范文请对照活动中的示例 PDF(2dfb38cf6860 ... sample.pdf)。

Model thinking (write your own in English):

We never truly get the "full story." The original gives only the pigs' side, while the advert's news-report framing makes the wolf seem misunderstood—both versions have gaps. Getting the full story matters, because the missing information decides whom we sympathize with.

In the video, the narrative perspective shifts from "the pigs as victims" to "public opinion putting the wolf on trial": the shots and captions lead viewers to doubt the accepted ending, turning the wolf from villain into a reported party, and shifting the storyline from "punishing evil" to "questioning the truth."
