Step 1: Select Your Topic & Stance 第一步:选择主题与立场
Read through the following statements; for each, decide if you agree or disagree (this is called your stance):
- All students (K-12) should be required to learn a second language at school.
- In addition to passing all their courses, students should have to complete 40 hours of community service to earn their high school diploma.
- High school students should only be allowed to work at a job for a maximum of 10 hours a week.
Now, choose the topic and stance you want to write about for this assignment. Your goal will be to write a persuasive paragraph, using PEEL structuring techniques, that persuades your reader to agree with, and act on, your stance.

Step 2: Create Your Graphic Organizer 第二步:制作图形组织图
Review [1-2C: Mind Maps and Graphic Organizers]. Identify the type of graphic organizer that will work best to help you generate and organize your ideas for your paragraph. Then, create a graphic organizer that contains the following information organized in a clear, sensible way:
- Chosen topic from the list provided in Step 1.
- Stance on that topic, either agreeing or disagreeing.
- Three or more potential target audiences. Only target audiences that would reasonably care about the chosen statement will earn marks.
- Four or more potential Points that support your stance and could start PEEL-structured arguments. Only reasonable, relevant Points that match the topic and stance will earn marks.

We recommend that you use the free version of Canva to create your graphic organizer, but you can use any digital method you'd like as long as your final product is clear and legible.

No Outside Research Allowed 禁止使用外部研究资料
NOTE: You are forbidden from using any outside research sources for any part of this assignment. Any part of your work that relies on information from an external source, whether or not you attempted to cite it, will receive a 0.
One reason for this restriction is because you have not yet been taught to assess good sources and cite. The other part is because this assignment is designed to assess your own independent thinking, not your ability to paraphrase or quote somebody else's ideas.

Step 1: Write the First Draft 第一步:写出初稿
Using the work you did in Part 1, write the first draft of your persuasive paragraph. It must contain the following:
- Open your paragraph with a 1-sentence thesis statementthesis statement 论点句:段落开头一句话,点明主题、立场和将用的两个支持论点。 that: (a) establishes the topic you chose; (b) identifies your stance; (c) briefly mentions the 2 supporting Points you will use. Although you brainstormed 4+ Points in Part 1, only choose the best 2. If you include more than 2 points, your GT will only read/mark the first two.
- For each of your 2 Points, complete a set of PEELPEEL 结构:Point(论点)、Evidence(证据)、Explanation(解释)、Link(衔接)四步论证结构。 structure within your paragraph (so, you should have exactly 2 sets of PEEL in the same paragraph). Include all 4 pieces of PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link), in the right order, and use transition wordstransition words 过渡词:如 furthermore、in addition、therefore 等,帮助读者跟上论证转折的连接词。 effectively.
- Each set of PEEL must use one persuasive strategy (ethos, logos, or pathos). You may not use the same device twice; one device will not be used. You must identify in parentheses (), after the Link sentence, which persuasive strategy you attempted to use. Unlabelled devices do not count for marks.
- End your paragraph with a 1-sentence conclusion sentence that clearly states what you want your target audience to do.

Step 2: Revise, Polish & Format (MLA) 第二步:修改、润色与 MLA 格式
Most of the written work you submit for ENG3U/ENG4U must be typed on a word processor (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.) and follow MLA Paper Formatting, the same standard expected at university. We provide [a downloadable pre-formatted MLA template] already set up to follow all MLA rules. Just change the information as needed (name, date, assignment name, etc.) and add your original work. Do not add anything extra like a cover page, extra colours, bold or underlined text, images, etc. unless specifically asked for.
REMINDER: Using AI tools, including editing tools and translation tools when writing and revising, is forbidden for this assignment. - You may use your word processor's built-in spelling, grammar, and conciseness tools, as long as you do not over-rely on them. - Students whose first language is not English may use translation tools for individual words and short phrases, but never for the whole assignment. - Make sure you completely understand all the words you use and are not misusing synonyms.

Submission Requirements 提交要求
- Export the good copies of your graphic organizer (Part 1) and your paragraph (Part 2) as .pdfs.
- Use a free tool, like this one from [Adobe], to combine both .pdfs into 1 file. The graphic organizer must be on page 1, and your paragraph must start on page 2.
- Finally, submit that file by following the How to Submit instructions and the "Add Submission" button at the bottom of the page.
